Manga based on Shakespeare – and who said comics can’t be educational?  This is an interesting concept, and it’s  attractively presented.  The interior contains full color pages featuring each character and a notable quote before shifting to  b&w illustrations.  The paper is a nice heavy stock, and the book is larger, 6″ x 8.5″, making TOKYOPOP and Viz titles seem dinky in comparison.  Also included is a plot summary of the story, and a biography of Shakespeare.  Overall, Self Made Hero has put together an attractive package.

Popular high school student Suwa Daisuke has no interest in dating newcomer Aikawa Hinako, a quiet loner. That's because she recoiled from his flirtatious touch, and he took it as a personal affront. Daisuke informs one of his buddies that he wouldn't date her, not knowing Hinako was listening. Daisuke's attitude changes after he accidentally hears her confession in an abandoned church; she's been sexually abused by her stepfather and has given up a child for adoption. His former annoyance turns to compassion and concern. Hinako is unaware that he knows her terrible secret. Believing him to have no romantic interest, she becomes more relaxed and comfortable in his company. Their relationship faces a lot of obstacles, including jealous classmates.

The story begins a few months after the events of Kick-Ass. Mindy is living a double life, trying to train Dave to make him a more efficient hero while being pressured to give up vigilantism by Marcus, her godfather, who wishes her to lead a normal life with him and her mother. She eventually relents after he finds a hidden cache of heavy weaponry in her playroom.

Meanwhile, Dave/Kick-Ass has taken to patrolling with various other heroes. Ever since the attack on John Genovese, heroes have taken to the streets and are generally accepted by the public as part of everyday life. Whilst patrolling with a hero named Doctor Gravity, a pair of men approach the two, claiming to need help. They attack suddenly but Kick-Ass easily subdues them, thanks to his training. Unfortunately, a group of gang members see the attack and chase Kick-Ass and Doctor Gravity into retreat.
